STEPHAN KEHRER - BUILDING SOLUTIONS

Miara Hotel

The project is situated in the village of San Vigilio di Marebbe in the Italian Dolomites. The place is known as famous ski and nature preserve and frequented by many tourists both in winter and in the summer time. The Dolomites as an UNESCO heritage preserved area attracts many people from far away.

The residence building is designed as an annex building of an existing restaurant and built adjacent to a ski slope and ropeway. The new building has 3 floors as well as an underground floor. The old restaurant and the new residence are connected with a one storey garage.

The building contains 1 suites and one breakfast area on level 1 and 2 suites on level 2. It also has a spacious apartment for the owner on top level 3. Each suite is designed in a different way to make them unique. The guests highly appreciate the quality of their suites that are spacious and give opportunity to watch the many skiers on the slope.

The primarily idea of the residence was a bed and breakfast, in a more luxurious way than usually, since the building is part of a farm. But the fact that it is located between the ski slope and the ropeway influenced the design in that way to make it unique. Designing the building we wanted to stay traditional but at same time offer spacious rooms and good light conditions for the guests and the owner.

A building adjacent to the ski slope sets conditions that differ from a normal site with surrounding greenery. A ski slope is like a pedestrian area, loud and busy during the day. The ropeway gives skiers the possibility to look over the building from above. All this influenced the design, and we decided to create a more or less closed volume positioned exactly parallel to the ropeway in the north and the ski slope in the south. With the ropeway you are flying parallel to the residence building and 15 min later you will experience the south façade by ski.

As a result the design in quite different from other buildings in that area and has the character of a box put between ropeway and ski slope.
